How is your new heroine, “A Lady in Defiance” of the times or circumstances in which she lived?
Well, I seem to be writing ladies in defiance a lot these days…maybe I always do in certain measure, because I love strong heroines who know their own minds! My new heroine, Zara Ruiz, is a modern-day girl who travels back in time to 1840 Mexican-California. She faces assumptions of how she should act and speak from the get-go, and a male-dominant culture (Hello there, Machismo!) that grates on her nerves. She’s used to making her own decisions and speaking her own mind. The people she meets also assume she is a lady, and as one of the “upper class,” she faces discrimination between masters and servants. Here’s a sneak peek:
Zara has grown up helping her grandmother run her restaurant, so she finds cooking soothing. So she goes to the kitchen and insists she be put to work, and joins right in with the staff there without further thought. She also makes our hero, Javier, take second- and third-glances when she defends herself (a little Krav Maga—Israeli martial arts—always helps), speaks her mind freely, and plays the guitar with abandon.
Did I hear something about a possible TV/Movie deal in the works?!!!!? Any updates on that you can share?
This is about as close as I’ve ever come! Can’t tell you more than two major studios are interested. Will that pan out into anything? Who knows! Hollywood seems to be a Yeah!-That’s-Great!-Now-Wait! sorta town.
You seem to write books in every genre of writing possible! Children’s, Teen, Historical, Sci-fi/Fantasy, Non-fiction… Wowza! IF you had to pick only one genre to write forever and ever, what would it be and why?
Hmmm….It just might be these time travel novels. Because I think it’s how I set my mind every time I write…How would it feel if I was in her shoes there and then? And given that I have a passion for history, it just allows me to pretend in a way that makes me grin as I write.
Do you have a God-moment to share? An instance where you knew you were in the right place, doing the right thing, for His greater purpose?
What a great question! Happily, I have those often, because I’m committed to trying to pay attention to how he is leading and follow through where he points me. Last weekend, it was helping a single mama by bringing over troops to fix things in her house, clean, and organize. She said, “I feel so loved! It’s like I won the lottery!” I am still smiling as I write that, because that was all God, and I was just so happy that we followed through.
