We usually think of pioneer women as those who struggled and survived the arduous journey into the unclaimed American West in covered wagons. But by definition, a pioneer is a person who begins or helps develop something new and prepares the way for others to follow. Amelia Earhart, aviatrix, was such a pioneer.
I’ve always been fascinated by flight—birds, airplanes, space ships. When I graduated from high school, my only chance to participate in flight was joining the Air Force. I had not turned eighteen and permission from my parents was required. They refused. By the time I was eighteen, I had finished a quarter of college and stayed there.
Amelia Earhart was not the first to pilot an airplane, nor the first female to do so. Her accomplishments in the field of aviation, however, are noteworthy and motivational. As have many women, Amelia Earhart faced the naysayers to success.
When I face rejections and delays in my writing career, I’m encouraged by her mindset never to quit before attempting the tasks before her.
Piloting her plane, Ms. Earhart set many records. She set a final challenge for herself: to be the first woman to fly around the world. “I have a feeling that there is just about one more good flight left in my system, and I hope this trip is it,” she said. Although she gave a 110 percent effort, she failed her final challenge.
I admire Amelia Earhart’s courage, vision, and groundbreaking achievements in pursuit of her dreams. On days when my energy level is low and motivation is weak, I’m tempted to stop writing. However, what writing ability I have comes from God and I must be the best steward of that gift that I can be.
