Let's dive into the controversy surrounding the show The Chosen since some people are suggesting good Christians should boycott the wildly successful series.
First, the background. It seems a cameraman or some such crew person had an LGBTQ-whatever sticker on his equipment. Some Christians took offense and accused The Chosen producers and cast of "promoting" the sin.
Words were exchanged on Twitter between a couple of Chosen actors and Twitter people. Things were said that should not have been said...by both sides.
Dallas Jenkins, creator of The Chosen, tried to explain that not all the people who work on the show are Believers. He's never instituted a litmus test for cast or crew. They simply try to hire the best people they can find.
Now, people are suggesting we turn our backs on the show. I don't think I'm down with that. Here's my point of view: The Chosen is a show that comes together by using a mix of Christian and secular businesses. While the helm of the show is manned by vocal and (I believe) sincere Believers, not everything is under their control. Not every person is under their control.
I think Dallas and the other producers are doing the best they can to turn out an amazing Biblical story. It is a great show. It's got people talking about Jesus. Isn't that awesome? Yes.
But don't look behind the curtain. People do stupid things. They say stupid things. If you watch the politics behind your favorite show...it won't be your favorite show anymore. Believe me, I've made this mistake. I'll never watch another Liam Neeson movie.
I guess my point is to try to take The Chosen at face value--the story of Jesus and his disciples. God uses imperfect people and situations all the time to further his Kingdom. I think that's what is happening here. My plan: stay out of the fray.
Now, if Dallas and Angel Studios were suddenly to come out and say, "Hey, we think pedophilia is okay." Yeah, that would be a big problem for me. But right now, they're trying to protect the integrity of the show and its message. I was heartened to learn one of the actors was recently born again because of his part!
There is good stuff happening here, but yes, Satan is raising his ugly head. Like he always does. I say let's keep cool and just enjoy the show...but with an ear to the ground. And keep the true Believers in your prayers. They are in the middle of a firestorm.
What do you think? Will you be boycotting or watching?
What can you expect from a wordmeister? Well said, Heather. Before judgment comes examination!
