Isolation of the Tin Can

LIFT UP YOUR EYES.

Seriously. Lift up your eyes.

Because I don't fly a lot, I get the benefit of being confused by the inevitable changes at airports and in people's behavior.

This most recent flight to Orlando was a real eye-opener, but in a sad way. I would say that 95% of the people on the plane (maybe more) never lifted their shades on their windows. They were glued to their phones or to the TV in seat back. It was astonishing.

So very few people cared to look out the window at the blue sky, magnificent cloud formations, and the amazing earth below. They didn't care to know if we were taking off or landing. I found it disheartening.

We're so divided in this nation, we should try to reach across the aisle (literally) and make a new friend. Of course, I did. LOL You can tell if a person is open to chatting. They'll respond to a simple comment with one of their own and that usually opens the door. Otherwise, body language and short answers are the cues.

I was fortunate to sit by a young man on the way to Orlando who is questioning the craziness coming out of a certain party. He said he'd leaned left most of his life, but now the craziness is making him reexamine long-held beliefs. Then he asked if I'd ever heard of Lee Strobel. Boy, did that open a great conversation!

Returning from Orlando, I sat by an African American gentleman and we had a calm, friendly conversation about politics. We truly enjoyed hearing what the other thought about things. He, too, however, was beginning to shy away from the left's policies. I believe that he, as a follower of Jesus, was getting revelation from the Holy Spirit. Truth was shining light on the lies he'd never questioned.

My point is, be aware of your surroundings. I've said that before, but this time I mean spiritually. If somebody is ready to talk, try to find a gentle way to speak truth in love. Plant some seeds. Give them something to think about. It's a good use of your time and may yield a great harvest!
